What is the West Nile Virus?
The West Nile Virus is a disease that is transferred to humans from mosquitoes. Most people are infected with the West Nile Virus when the weather is warm. This is the time when mosquitoes are the most active. There have been cases of the West Nile Virus in Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia.

It was first discovered in the United States in 1999. It has been reported in all of the states except for Alaska and Hawaii. Cases have also been reported in Canada.

Only 20 percent of people who are infected with the West Nile Virus will develop symptoms. Skin rash, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, body aches and fever are some of the possible symptoms. One percent of people with the West Nile Virus will develop a neurological infection. High fever, confusion, disorientation and stiff neck are some of the signs of a neurological infection. Neurological infections can result in death if left untreated.

When the West Nile Virus was first discovered in 1999, it spread quickly. The mosquitoes spread the disease to birds. The disease was then spread to humans and animals through the infected birds.

Other Ways that the West Nile Virus Can be Spread
